Renewing Your ESA Letter

Renewing is easy!

In short, you will fill out a renewal self-assessment and be re-assessed by a licensed healthcare professional (LHCP) — likely the same one with whom you consulted last year!

Manual vs automatic-renewal

You will receive an email reminder around your original order’s anniversary date.

If you chose one of the auto-renewing memberships:

Your order will be automatically processed with a deep discount, and sent a renewal self-assessment link. If you decide you do not want to refresh your letter, you may cancel your membership with the link in the reminder emails. You may also contact us at any time to cancel. Select “Request to cancel membership” from the Subject dropdown menu.

If you selected a one-time Essentials letter:

You will be sent a renewal self-assessment link and need to pay at checkout. If you prefer not to refresh your letter, you don’t have to do anything! We respect your inbox and we’ll stop sending you reminders when you ignore us.

Privacy

You might be wondering why we don’t just send you a pre-populated form to pass to your LHCP. By design, we are unable to pre-populate renewal forms for you as we respect your privacy and routinely delete private identifying information from our internal systems that are not necessary for our business to function. Furthermore, your personal situation and mental health may have changed over the past year, and will reflect in the self-assessment.

Why you should annually refresh your ESA letter with us

We’ll be completely up-front with you: Fair Housing rules are still silent regarding ESA letters expiring. However, outdated letters can cause inconvenience when you need them most. If it’s been more than a year, landlords, especially if you’ve moved, may insist on an updated ESA recommendation. Additionally, a licensed healthcare professional may not validate your ESA letter or submit additional housing forms if your evaluation is extremely outdated. 

Furthermore, some states, like California, have a 30 day waiting period to obtain a new letter if you visit a new LHCP. By continuing with ESA Letters, we will try our best to match you with your previous LHCP so that we can avoid these waiting periods and expedite your renewal process. Additionally, we act as a customer service intermediary so we can quickly coordinate with LHCPs to save you both time and money.
